INTERPRETATION OF GERARD VAN HONTHORST’S RELIGIOUS PAINTINGS

Wang Yijia
Saint Petersburg University

Abstract. The article examines Gerard van Honthorst’s religious paintings. The iconographic type of illumination allows the painter to achieve specific dramatic effect in his works. Analyzing illumination in Honthorst’s religious paintings from the viewpoint of Caravaggism tradition the author concludes that Honthorst not only introduced systematic use of the physical light source but also chose the static and quiet candlelight, contrary to Caravaggio’s flickering light.
