GEL SYSTEMS AS A TECHNIQUE TO WORK WITH SURFACE LAYERS OF EASEL OIL PAINTINGS

Abstract. The article describes the experience of the Department of Scientific Restoration of Easel Oil Painting of the State Research Institute of Restoration in relation to using gel systems as a technique to work with protective layers of pictures. The paper provides a general characteristic of gels, their components, describes the results of foreign researchers’ project to study gel residuals and their influence on painting surface. By the example of easel oil paintings in different condition and with different technical and technological peculiarities the author illustrates the advantages of practical usage of gels when solving complicated restoration problems.
