Abstract. The article analyzes the socio-economic activity of Saransk authorities during the First World War. It is noted that a number of additional functions appeared in the town government during the wartime: caring for the war invalids and orphans, helping the sick and wounded soldiers, in connection with this, organizing military hospitals, as well as conducting public readings. The authors come to the conclusion that the war had a very negative impact on the living standards of the urban population. The reason for this was the crisis in industry and agriculture, as well as severance of economic ties.
