WALTZ METAMORPHOSES IN THE RUSSIAN MUSIC OF THE XIX CENTURY

Abstract. The article deals with the existence of the waltz genre in the Russian musical culture of the XIX century and its evolution. "Waltz-Fantasia" by M. Glinka should be considered the first Russian classical waltz. The peculiarity of the Russian waltzes is in the close connection of vocal and dance genres, and the great flexibility of the waltz formula is associated with it. Along with vocal and piano miniatures in the Russian music, the waltz found its place in suites and symphonies, operas and ballet performances. The authors note that starting from amateur everyday music-making at the beginning of the century, the waltz had risen to large-scale concert works in P. Tchaikovsky’s and A. Glazunov’s creativity, to philosophical reflections and wide generalizations.
