HISTORY OF CREATING THE SOVIET GROUND-ATTACK AIRCRAFT IL-2 AND ITS EFFICIENCY DURING THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR

Abstract. The article examines formation conditions and development stages of the USSR attack aviation in the period of 1922-1945 by the example of the history of creating the Soviet ground-attack aircraft IL-2. The analysis of technical aspects of aircraft modelling is combined with the analysis of archival data on aircraft combat efficiency, which allows tracing the "flying tank" history from the planning stage to its implementation. The authors conclude that modified IL-2 mostly satisfied modern requirements for this type of weapon and contributed greatly to the victory in the Great Patriotic War.
