Abstract. The authors trace the formation and development of Harbin Institute of Technology in Manchuria in the period of 1920-1976. The paper reveals the basic motives for the active development of engineering higher school in Harbin. The source basis of the study includes all the issues of "Polytechnic" journal. New material on the theme is summarized; post-structuralism approaches are applied to study the national history. The authors examine certain aspects of intercultural communication between the Russians, Chinese and Japanese within the space of Harbin Institute of Technology.
