Abstract. The article examines the category of modality in philosophy and modern linguistics. The authors provide a survey of linguistic theories of modality paying special attention to debatable methodological issues of the existing typologies. The ultimate foundations of modality are analysed with a view to develop a cardinally new understanding of this category in linguistics. The paper suggests a methodology of modal typology in language basing on the classical understanding of modality in philosophy. The findings allow concluding on equivocal nature of philosophical and linguistic methodology for solving adjacent tasks of subsistential nature.
