Abstract. The change in the art discourse occurred in the 1950-1970s resulted in the necessity to reconsider the status of art brut, visionary art and the related phenomena in the artistic process. In this period, these phenomena gradually came out from the so called cultural "reservations". The paper shows that the concept "outsider art" neutralizes the negativistic, pathological context ascribed to the art phenomena designated by this term. Roger Cardinal, Victor Musgrave, Harald Szeemann propose a new interpretation of outsider art in the context of theory and institutional practice of postmodernity.
