Abstract. The research objectives are as follows: to identify the basic groups of toponyms of the Chelnovaya river basin and to show that their origin is associated with the original population of this region. The article provides a comparative analysis of toponymical data, presents archaeological and historical evidence, proposes ethno-cultural hypotheses. The researcher’s attention is focused on toponyms, which were supposedly borrowed from other languages. The author justifies the thesis that certain toponyms of the central part of the Oka-Don Lowland have a Baltic origin, which constitutes scientific originality of the study. The conducted research allows identifying historical periods when this territory was successively in possession of the Finno-Ugric, Baltic and Slavic people.
Key words and phrases: река Челновая, топонимия, гидронимы, археологические и исторические свидетельства, финно-угорское, балтское, русское население, Chelnovaya river, toponymy, hydronyms, archaeological and historical evidence, Finno-Ugric, Baltic, Slavic population.
