Changes in the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs and in Penitentiary System in March-June 1953 (by the Material of Kuybyshev Region)

Abstract. The article examines changes in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and in the penitentiary system that occurred after I. V. Stalin’s death. The implemented measures are analysed taking into account spheres of their realization. The following issues are considered: problems of functioning, economic activity, budgetary expenses, contingent of corrective labour camps and corrective labour colonies, execution of decrees of the USSR Supreme Soviet and resolutions of the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. The study is based on archival materials of Kuybyshev regional archives. The problem of the regional party leaders’ reaction to changes in the Ministry of Internal Affairs and in the penitentiary system is tackled.
