Submitted: 01.06.2020
Abstract. The study aims to determine the role and significance of fortification lines in wars of the XVII-XVIII centuries. Scientific novelty of the paper lies in analysing military and engineering experience as a specific facet of universal culture; common-European and unique, borrowed and traditional components are identified within this experience. Using historical examples, the author demonstrates strengths and weaknesses of employing fortification lines in the wars, in which Russia, France, the Netherlands and other countries of the period engaged. As a result of the study, the researcher comes to the conclusion that the Russian field fortification of the considered period is a symbiosis of general cultural universality with its invariable harmony and contradictory nature and the Russian uniqueness, which draws its strength from customs and traditions.
