Abstract. The article reviews the main approaches to understanding solidarity through the lens of rationalism and the choice arising on its basis as a way for Homo sapiens to adapt to emerging conditions of social life. The authors present their own definition of social solidarity, basing on which they explore the key issues of functioning of consolidation mechanisms manifesting themselves at the present stage of the society development. The researchers conclude that solidarity, grounded in the rational core of any kind of sociality, functions as a self-regulation mechanism of social communities and can be used as a means against increasing alienation of an individual.
