Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the phenomenon of "composer’s theatre" using the example of Alexander Manotskov’s opera "52" that he staged during the 2018-2019 theatre season in the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre. The author treats the production as a complex phenomenon related to composer’s theatre on the Russian stage as well as to the "new Russian musical theatre". The aim of the study is to consider "52" through the lens of other works by Alexander Manotskov and also from the perspective of the repertoire policy carried out by the art director of the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre, Andrey Moguchy. Scientific novelty of the research lies in interpretation of the production in the context of the "new Russian musical theatre" and also in an accompanying analysis of the tendency to stage musical productions in drama theatres. As a result of the study, a comprehensive analysis of "52" as an example of "composer’s theatre" is conducted, possibility of attributing "52" to such a phenomenon as the "new Russian musical theatre" is considered.
