THE AUTHOR’S INTERPRETATION OF FAMOUS PLOTS IN S. LAGERL?F’S "CHRIST LEGENDS AND OTHER STORIES"

Abstract. The article deals with the sources of S. Lagerlof’s "Christ Legends and Other Stories". The aim of the work is to identify the nature of loanwords typical of the cycle and the way of interpreting the material in the cycle. The texts which served as sources of separate legends are the New Testament, apocryphal gospels, and folklore apocrythical works. Despite the variety of sources, the material is interpreted consistently with regard to the plot organization and the system of personages. It allows S. Lagerl?f to make the texts in the genre of the literary legend.
