The novel “Virgin Soil” as I. S. Turgenev’s creative polemic with F. M. Dostoevsky

Abstract.
The purpose of the study is to identify Turgenev’s polemical views on Dostoevsky’s artistic manner in the novel “Virgin Soil”. The article examines the “echoes” between the characters of the novels “Virgin Soil” and “Crime and Punishment”, and determines the role of allusions and paraphrase. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that it is the first to consider the novel “Virgin Soil” as an artistic “response” to Dostoevsky’s novel, a polemical “mirroring” of his creative style. As a result of the study, it is established that the late Turgenev’s turn to a new type of heroes, the drama of personality, and the tragic contradictions of life testifies not so much to the typological connections between the two novelists as to a conscious creative “borrowing” of techniques for creating images and scenes from Dostoevsky’s works with the aim of their artistic and psychological reinterpretation. In his last novel, Turgenev ironically reflects the creative principles of his ideological opponent.
