Abstract. In the article the French linguist Roland Barthes's terms reality effect, figure, lexia, code are considered. In R. Barthes's works the contexts were found in which the semiotic ambiguity of these terms is observed and the differences in their meaning were revealed. The material for analysis is authentic French texts and their Russian translation.
