Abstract. The article is devoted to the one of the most important categories of language and thinking – the quantity category. Its way of making and development is considered. On the base of the works of the eminent domestic and foreign linguists the short excursus of this category study in the modern linguistics is given. The comparison of the quantity category in various Indo-European languages gives the important linguistic and culturological information, which presents a certain practical and theoretical importance and emphasizes the relevance of the researches in the given direction.
