Fedotova Oksana Sergeevna
Ryazan' State University named after S. A. Esenin

Abstract. The author shows that a writer in the English language narrative discourse openly addresses the reader, commenting on various non-basic narrative issues, not only in the XVIII th and XIX th centuries, but at the present stage. One of the themes of dialogue between a writer and reader is the feature of society, which is modern to a writer. Moreover, writers’ concerns are the same in different time periods. The difference exists only in the form of writer’s address to the reader: in literary works of the end of the XX th – the beginning of the XXI st century they are shorter and expressed mainly in the form of maxims.
