RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF THEORETICAL SURVEYS IN SPHERE OF "DIPHTHONG" NOTION DETERMINATION AND DESCRIPTION OF AMERICAN VOCALISM DIPHTHONGS SYSTEM

Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of views evolution on the English language diphthongs system, which quantitative characteristics in the phonemic stock of the American and British vocalism remain the object of linguists’ extensive discussion. The author of the article conditions researchers’ opinions dissociation with biphonemic and monophonemic approaches differences existence in diphthongs classification, and also the ambiguous interpretations of the notion "diphthong" itself that actualizes its determination problem.
