TEXT-FORMATIVE FUNCTIONS OF ANTONYMY (BY THE MATERIAL OF ENGLISH ANTONYMS)

Abstract. In the article the existing in modern science classifications of antonyms are analyzed by the type of meaning, the character of opposition, the degree of opposedness, and the use in typical antonymic contexts. On the basis of the conducted analysis the author asserts that the interest in the functioning of antonymic oppositions in speech has been steadily increasing, and considers antonyms as expressive means of the contrast making and means of preservation of cohesion and coherence of the text.
