"ALL IS NOT GOLD THAT GLITTERS" (ON THE STORY BY A. P. CHEKHOV "GOOSEBERRIES")

Fomina Mariya Anatol'evna
Moscow State Pedagogical University

Abstract. The article aims to study good and evil in the story "Gooseberries" by A.P. Chekhov. The research focuses on discovering the basic idea - degeneration of a human being into a philistine. The author identifies that good and evil are closely interrelated, and sometimes it’s difficult to differentiate between a true kindness and an imaginary one. Evil is cunning, many-sided and can transform even the good thought into a phantom. Chekhov showed the result of an imaginary dream capable to replace conscience from a human being. Only a free personality released from all kinds of burdens can distinguish between a natural kindness and an illusionary one.
