"BAYRAM OF EXTREME SIZES" OR WHY DO ETHIOPIAN AND NEGRO "DEVILS" DRINK FIREWATER (M. A. BULGAKOV’S FEUILLETON "THE CRIMSON ISLAND")

Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the motif of alcohol, which is closely associated with the principle of binarity typical of M. A. Bulgakov’s poetics. The task is to study the meaning and function of firewater by the material of the feuilleton "The Crimson Island". The paper considers the motivic connections of alcohol with oneurosphere, carnival, sacrifice, the cult of Dionysus and the Eucharist. A number of projections and parallels, which allow considering firewater as a symbol of power, happiness, hope, generosity, immortality, etc., are revealed
