CLASSIFICATION OF PERSONAL NAMES IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACCORDING TO FIVE CRITERIA

Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of classifying personal names in the English language. The existing types of classifications of anthroponyms are given. The author proposes her own classification of English personal names, taking into account the following five criteria: the gender, a source language for borrowing a name, the etymology, the variants of the name in other languages, and the availability of derivatives. The relevance of the article is conditioned by the fact that the presented classification is versatile and allows giving a brief description of the name: its origin, spelling and phonetic variants, information about derivatives, thereby determining its place in the diversity of personal names of the English language.
