Abstract. The paper examines the choice of the type of motivational warrant in pragmatic argument as a means of psychotherapist’s strategic maneuvering in a counselling session. Approaches to pragmatic argumentation are reviewed. A structural scheme of pragmatic argument is suggested. Two types of motivational warrant in pragmatic argument are distinguished: appeal to the motive of achieving gain and to the motive of avoiding losses.
