Abstract. The article examines the English and Lak paroemias through the lenses of gender relations. The analysis of the proverbs allows the author to conclude that andro-centricity is a key aspect of the English and Lak worldviews. The man is considered the head of the family and the bearer of positive features, while the woman is endowed with such negative qualities as quarrelsomeness and stubbornness. Difference between the English and Lak linguo-cultures is in the fact that the Englishmen consider the husband a victim if the wife proceeds to dominate in the family. The latter is conditioned by women’s increased economic activity in the British society, which resulted in sexes equality. The Lak society remains patriarchal, so in the Lak language there are no proverbs on gender equality.
