Abstract. The article analyzes the views of theoreticians and practitioners of translation on the most relevant and debatable issues of scenic, or theatrical translation. On the basis of comparative analysis of the Buryat translations of W. Shakespeare’s plays performed with the interval of 75 years the authors trace the evolution of conceptions, or strategies to translate classics for the theatrical scene in terms of "freedom" vs "accuracy" , "foreignization" vs "domestication", "historical stylization" vs "modernization" of the target text. The paper concludes that the translator and the stage director are free to develop a new interpretation of classical dramaturgic works.
