Abstract. The article compares the worldviews represented in J. Steinbecks narrative "Of Mice and Men" and M. Gorkys play "The Lower Depths". For the first time, the paper examines biblical influences observed in these literary works. The researcher argues that the philosophical content of Gorkys play is associated with Christianity, and Steinbecks narrative - with the Old Testament; moreover, interpretation of these literary works as examples of social struggle restricts their content. The role of inter-text as a hermeneutic key to Steinbecks narrative is emphasized. It is shown that this narrative offers a fairy ideal.
