Abstract. The article analyses the process of phonetic assimilation of the Chinese borrowings in the English literary language. The authors examine linguistic situations, which allow identifying the level of a borrowing assimilation. Special attention is paid to identifying the features of the source language (Chinese) and the recipient language (the modern English literary language) that influence phonetic assimilation of foreign lexemes in the English language. The paper reveals the essence of phonetic assimilation in relation to the Chinese borrowings.
