HOMONYMY AS A MEANS TO CREATE AMPHIBOLY IN THE BRITISH AND GERMAN LINGUO-CULTURES

Abstract. The article considers the linguistic aspect of the comical in the English and German languages. The authors compare the peculiarrities of verbalization of the comical in the appropriate linguo-cultures, analyse the mechanism to create amphiboly by means of homonymy. The analysis of empirical material including anecdotes, prosaic and poetic humorous statements has allowed the authors to reveal the national specificity of the English and German humour. The findings lead to the conclusion that differrences in verbalization of the comical in the British and German linguo-cultures are the result of cultural and historical processes in the mentioned countries.
