Peculiarities of SMS Abbreviations in Messages (by the Example of the Germanic Languages)

Abstract. The study aims to determine peculiarities of making SMS abbreviations in messages using examples from English and German. The article considers the following models of SMS-abbreviations: initial abbreviations, syllabic abbreviations, replacement of a part of a word with a digit, morpheme contractions, omission of the subject in the sentence and grapheme identity. Scientific novelty lies in identification of common models that contribute to compilation of SMS abbreviations in both English and German. As a result, general rules for making SMS abbreviations for the two foreign languages are determined, and results of a survey are presented confirming significance and practical need for the research topic.
