Article Forms of Postpositions in the Modern Eastern Armenian Language

Abstract. The paper for the first time considers article forms of postpositions with spatial meaning including those used in colloquial speech and in some dialects of the modern Eastern Armenian language. The study aims to classify and describe these linguistic phenomena from the syntactical, semantic and stylistic viewpoints. The analysis allows identifying three basic types of article forms of postpositions in which a definite article performs the following functions: 1) substantivator; 2) possessive/coordinative affix in possessive construction; 3) locative indicator. If the first and the second form largely do not contradict literary norms and satisfy general principles of a definite article usage then the third one stands apart: firstly, this form is not typical of the literary language, and, secondly, it represents the previously undiscovered adverbializing/locative function of a definite article in the modern Eastern Armenian language.
