Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the English neologisms. The research objectives are as follows: to identify newly appeared lexical units and to classify them from the viewpoint of their functional load. The paper aims to reveal influence of COVID-19 pandemic as an extra-linguistic phenomenon on neologisms formation in the English language, taking into account mental models. The author compares neologisms that appeared in the period from January 1 to July 1, 2019 and from January 1 to July 1, 2020. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher reveals tendencies of neologisms formation, suggests a thematic classification of neologisms and shows that their origin is associated with the quarantine/self-isolation regime during the pandemic. The research findings are as follows: the author identifies thematic groups of neologisms which serve as examples of how self-isolation accentuates or counteracts the established tendencies.
