Abstract. The paper aims to reveal the role of phraseological units in the Russian language as bearers of the Proto-Slavic vocabulary. The authors classify phraseological units into thematic groups according to the meaning of their Proto-Slavic component, identify derivatives and phraseological units containing the Proto-Slavic nouns, analyse the meaning of phraseological units and trace semantic evolution of primary lexemes in the structure of phraseological units. Scientific originality of the study involves identifying the role of phraseological units as bearers of the Proto-Slavic vocabulary. As a result, it is proved that phraseological units preserve the Proto-Slavic nominations of material culture objects and spiritual culture phenomena, which makes the Russian phraseology especially valuable in studying the Proto-Slavic vocabulary.
