Abstract. The paper aims to identify peculiarities of the English onomatopoetic vocabulary as an object of a cognitive (conceptual) analysis. Scientific originality of the study is conditioned by the fact that the author for the first time applies the cognitive (conceptual) approach to analyse the English onomatopoetic vocabulary from the viewpoint of R. Langacker’s theory of domains. The research findings are as follows: relying on the cognitive approach, the author reveals the semantic potential of the English onomatopoetic words, traces evolution of their semantic meanings in terms of nucleus and periphery, identifies the most frequent conceptual domains represented by onomatopoetic words.
