On the Structure of Narrative Shifts in Translation

Abstract. The aim of the study is to examine cases of discrepancy between the narrative characteristics of the original and the translations (content, narrator’s status, focalization) using the material of multiple translations from Russian into French and from French into Russian, to determine the reasons for such narrative shifts and describe their internal structure. The scientific originality of the research lies in a multifaceted analysis of narrative shifts in the context of multiple translations. As a result, it has been shown that narrative shifts can be caused by various factors (polysemy of the original units forms, attitude towards isomorphism of perception, peculiarities of the translator’s strategy), that they can manifest themselves to a greater or lesser extent and be carried out through simple transformations (explanations, anaphoric substitutions, etc.).
