“One’s Own Foreign”: The Specifics of Functioning of Foreign Phraseological Units in the Works of Russian Émigré Writers

Submitted: 02.12.2022
Abstract. The aim of the study is to carry out a systematic identification and idiostylistic interpretation of foreign phraseological units in the texts of Russian émigré writers of the early XX century. In addition, attention is paid to the frequency of such expressions in the works created by the authors before and after emigration. Separately, phraseological units are considered as a means of representing cultural concepts. The paper describes in detail the mechanisms of transformation of foreign phraseological units in the texts of émigré Russian writers, examines their authorial modifications caused by linguistic and extralinguistic reasons. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in identifying the foreign language influence on the phrasemics of Russian émigré prose, including from the viewpoint of its autochthonous and acquired properties under the influence of a foreign cultural environment. The Russian stock of idioms of émigré prose has not been previously studied in this aspect (with the exception of marginal remarks about the language of individual authors). The result of the study amounted to a systematic description of the specifics of the figurative component in foreign phraseological units in the texts of works by émigré writers, which allowed the researcher to obtain new information about the originality of the language of Russian émigré prose.
Key words and phrases: фраземика, иноязычные заимствования, фразеологические трансформации, способы модификации устойчивых выражений, phrasemics, foreign language borrowings, phraseological transformations, ways of modifying set expressions
