Abstract. The article considers the activity of state departments and community concerning the settlement of children left without parental care during Great Patriotic War. The author characterizes the basic forms of children's settlement in families (patronage, guardianship, adoption) which operated during that period and analyzes the role of family upbringing in decreasing the level of homelessness during the last years of war.
