IMAGE OF CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI IN SOCIO-POLITICAL LIFE OF MAHARASHTRA

Abstract. In the article the symbolic meaning of the personality of Maratha leader Shivaji Bhonsle, who established the independent Hindu state in the XVII century, is considered. His image is a part of the ideology of the socio-political movements of Maharashtra of the XX-XXI centuries. The author reflects the escalation of interconfessional contradictions in the region, the strengthening of extremist parties positions (Shiv Sena), which make a political capital out of the name of the Indian national hero chhatrapati Shivaji. Recent journalistic materials are analyzed in the article.
