Abstract. In the presented work the authors consider the history of root nomadic communities of Yakutia in the conditions of social-economic and political transformations of the XX century. The article highlights the most important state initiatives aimed at changing the social conditions of the northern nomads, as well as outlines the main results of the policy implemented in their relation. It is noted that the traditional way of life of nomadic communities has deep historical roots and any interference carries in itself serious threats to their ethno-cultural stability and security.
