THE ROLE OF LANGUAGE AND EDUCATIONAL POLICY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LEGAL STATUS OF ABORIGINES OF CANADA

Abstract. The article is devoted to the stages of development of the language policy of Canada in the field of indigenous education. The paper substantiates the role and place of language and educational policy in the relationship between linguistic and cultural community of aborigines of Canada and the federal government. The author gives a brief characterization of the three main groups of indigenous population, and describes the six stages of the evolution of approaches to education in the period of the XVII-XXI centuries. The study consistently presents the degree of legitimizing linguistic and educational rights of indigenous people at the federal level.
