THEOLOGY IN SECULAR AND SPIRITUAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN MODERN RUSSIA: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Abstract. Since 1994 the discipline "Theology" in Russia has been taught both in religious and secular higher educational institutions. It is assumed that academic theology, unlike divinity taught in religious educational establishments, is critical and is not related to religious practice and worship, does not train the clergymen, it is autonomous in relation to religious organizations. However, in practice, the principle of secularism in this discipline teaching is not always realized. The paper is a comparative analysis of church divinity and academic theology based on the study of the curricula of the educational programs of the discipline in religious and secular universities by the example of Omsk State University and St. Tikhon’s Orthodox University, as well as research papers published by Belgorod State National University graduates of this specialization.
