Abstract. The article examines the basic symbolic characteristics participating in the Northern Yakuts’ territorial identity formation. The author analyses meta-geographical images, concepts and myths, which come out as the basic units describing the image of a certain territory. The findings have allowed the author to develop a basic conception of the Northern Yakuts’ territorial identity. The conclusion is made that the concepts NORTH/COLD/MOUNTAIN serve as the key ethnic identity markers and as a basis of the Northern Yakuts’ national and cultural narrative.
