Abstract. The article is devoted to a relevant problem of preserving a unique phenomenon of global musical culture - the Mordovian polyphony. The author traces the history of studying the Mordovian musical folklore in domestic and foreign folkloristics, analyses the specificity of the Mordovian song folklore, which includes four types of polyphony - heterophony, diaphony, two-three-four-part bourdon polyphony, hypertrophic forms of polyphony with elements of the Russian multi-voice musical style; similarities and differences of bourdon polyphony in the Mordovian and Georgian song traditions are identified. The paper justifies the necessity to include the Mordovian polyphony in the UNESCO’s list of non-material cultural heritage.
