Problem of Defining the Notion "Philosophical Anthropology" according to M. Scheler

Abstract. The study aims to identify the principle meanings of the notion "philosophical anthropology" according to M. Scheler in his collection "Philosophical Perspectives" (1929) and in the work "The Human Place in the Cosmos" (1928). The article outlines problematic nature of reconstructing M. Scheler’s philosophical-anthropological "project" in general. An attempt is made to employ the philosophical-hermeneutical method, which consequently clarifies fundamental principles of his conception of philosophical anthropology. The researcher notes the heuristic potential and relevance of some of Scheler’s ideas. Scientific novelty lies in the fact that a new approach to the central philosophical-anthropological issue of a man’s essence is made possible basing on determination of the meaning of the notion "philosophical anthropology" according to M. Scheler. As a result, the issue of a man’s essence can be considered from the perspective of the questions "Where and when does a man exist?" and "What is a man capable of and what are his ways of being?".
