Abstract. The article analyses the causes that motivated France to conquer the regency of Algiers in 1830 and reveals the role of the Algerian authorities who underestimated the coming danger and couldn’t preserve the country’s independence. The study is based on the analysis of the French and English sources of the XIX century, which contain historical details not previously introduced into scientific circulation. The analysis of the circumstances preceding the military operation of 1830 testifies that when invading to Algeria, France sought to solve its home-policy problems rather than committed purposeful colonial invasion.
Key words and phrases: Алжирское регентство, Франция, средиземноморская торговля, варварийское пиратство, колониальный захват, regency of Algiers, France, Mediterranean trade, Barbary piracy, colonial invasion
