Submitted: 13.03.2020
Abstract. Relying on the systemic approach, the paper justifies academic status of the classical guitar. Special attention is paid to such issues as the instrument construction, repertoire, national traditions, performance and training. One of the key components of this system - professional performance - is examined with a view to prove that the accepted perception of the classical guitar as a folk instrument is false. Peculiarities of amateur and professional music playing are clarified, a historical survey of professional classical guitar performance in Europe and Russia is provided, its current stage is considered. The research findings are as follows: the author defines academic guitar performance, identifies its structural components, which constitutes scientific originality of the study.
