Abstract. The article is devoted to analysing the constructivist approach in studying the origin and formation of religious identity. The aim of this study is to review the theoretical research based on the constructivism methodology, which explains the individual and collective aspects of religious identity and its place in foreign social and religious studies. By analysing the constructivist approach to studying national and ethnic identity it was found that this methodological approach is also relevant to the study of religious identity, which makes this research novel. The paper concludes that identity is interpreted in foreign works as a way of constructing social reality.
