Scientists’ Images in Gerrit Dou’s Creative Work

Liu Sijia
Saint Petersburg University

Submitted: 13.12.2019
Abstract. The article analyses scientists’ images in creative work of the Dutch painter of the XVII century Gerrit Dou. The paper tackles the following issues: specificity of Dou’s creative work, the theme of the scientist’s room, influence of science, religion, philosophy on Dou’s pictorial works, symbolic meanings of objects around the scientist. The science theme represents the growing role of scientific knowledge not only within university centres, such as Leiden, but in the society in general. It is shown that creative environment in which the patron guarantees a painter’s freedom enables continuing Leiden school traditions, introducing new phenomena, developing new understanding of the science role in the world.
