M. Mussorgsky’s "Boris Godunov" as It Is Interpreted by A. Tarkovsky and R. Lloyd

Abstract. The research objectives are as follows: to analyze the conception of A. Tarkovsky’s famous 1983 production, to discover specificity of the stage director’s vision and to identify ways of Boris Godunov’s image scenic implementation, to reveal originality of the principal artist R. Lloyd’s interpretation of the Russian tsar’s image and to clarify the singer’s motives to reconsider this interpretation at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1990. Scientific originality of the study involves a comprehensive analysis of Boris Godunov’s image interpretation suggested by A. Tarkovsky and R. Lloyd. The conclusion is made that worldwide popularity of A. Tarkovsky’s artistic conception is conditioned by its musical and poetical symbolism, the artist’s intention to implement such an important idea as an individual’s helplessness in the face of history and spontaneous forces of people’s wrath.
