Abstract. The paper reconstructs the history of the first Arctic expedition of the Yakut Cryosolic Research Station team to the Lena river basin and the Laptev Sea coast and by the concrete example traces development of knowledge on permafrost soils. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that relying on previously unknown sources, the author reveals the basic activity trends of this expedition and identifies its scientific importance. The research findings are as follows: the author shows that the expedition gathered materials on the history of the areal formation, laid foundations for its geo-cryological study, developed appropriate research methodology.
